History of pilgrimages to Caravaca

The presence of pilgrims is well documented since the Middle Ages, particularly since the 14th century. The indulgences of Pope Clement VII (1392) state that "the Chapel of the Holy Cross of said Royal Castle is visited by a large number of the faithful, who come from far away." In the 15th and 16th centuries the existence of three hospitals reserving beds for pilgrims is documented, and we also dispose of a large number of testimonies from pilgrims, including Ferdinand the Catholic and Saint John of the Cross.
