Dating from 1883, it is one of the oldest engineering monuments in  Abarán. Until 1985, when the New Bridge was built, it was the only bridge over the Segura River to connect the town with the right bank. Since 2008, it has been classified as an Asset of Cultural Interest, with the status of Monument.

The place where it is located was called "La Cuna" in the middle of the 18th century. It alluded to the primitive means of passage formed by a hanging walkway made of esparto grass and wooden planks.
In 1838, the presence of a wooden bridge built on three ashlar pillars is documented, which was swept away by a flood in that year. This was replaced by a provisional wooden bridge upriver, "at the place where the waters split into two arms". After each flood, it was restored for four decades until 1881, when the construction of an iron bridge over the original bridge was authorised.
