Information

SABINA ALBAR’S WOODLAND

The Sabina is a tree with a dense, conical crown and aromatic wood. The Latin name is "Juniperus Thurifera" (thurifera means incense producer). This species, which has been declared a protected species, is typical of limestone terrain and areas at altitudes of over 800m. The areas of the districts of El Sabinar and El Calar de la Santa have some centuries-old examples that are found in an area declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, as there are several shelters with cave paintings. Among the fauna that lives in these places we can highlight mountain goats, hawks, eagles, eagles, eagle owls and choughs. The juniper blossoms in spring, and its fruit, between bluish and purple, ripens the following autumn. This is the most pleasant season for walking and retracing the forest that gave its name to El Sabinar, or if you prefer, for a circular route along the GR 7 (long-distance footpath: red and white signs) that runs along the sunny side of the Castellar hill, between fields and some monumental junipers, to the Calar de la Santa, leaving the Cantalar spring on the right, located in the imposing rocky cirque of Villafuerte.
