CHURCH SANTA ANA
Information

THE HERMITAGE OF SAINT ANNE.

Around 1607, the Confraternity of Saint Anne was founded and, shortly afterwards, in 1614, the Hermit was already built.

In the 18th century, the presbyter D. Joaquín Conejero Marín y López Amo, a Moratellero, undertook reconstruction work (1760-1796) under his own direction, even adding his own funds: ewer, organ (now lost), choir vault, choir steps, tower, finishing the façade, etc.The Hermitage was sacked during the Civil War, destroying the interior decoration. After the war, the necessary repairs were carried out.

The passage of time and the constant dampness in the enclosure gradually deteriorated the temple, which had to be closed to worship in 1988. Restoration work began in October 1994, with consolidation work and major interior modifications that changed the appearance of the church. The new works were aimed at adapting the church to the directives of Vatican II, seeking Christian symbolism in the following elements

During the construction work, the workers found a spring in the basement - the source of eternal humidity - and the niche of the current tabernacle was built over this spring. The layout of the altar, ambo and sanctuary are the most striking features of the new church of Santa Ana, as is the seating arrangement for the faithful. The three small niches in the apse are enlarged by plaster arches, the central one presiding over a large mural by the artist Ana Maria Almagro.

The dimensions of the altar were determined on the basis of the numerology of Mary's name in Hebrew.
