Oenology in the REGION OF
MURCIA
The Region of Murcia is an incredible wine
tourism destination. Wine has been cultivated
here since Roman times. In fact, it has three
denominations of origin: Bullas, Jumilla and
Yecla. These cover more than 35,000 hectares
that are home to vineyards and wineries
where tradition and innovation are combined.
In Bullas, Jumilla and Yecla we also find the
three Wine Routes, which are certified by the
Spanish Wine Cities Association (ACEVIN).
The combination of a Mediterranean climate,
with some semi-arid features, adds nuance
depending on the terrain, the dominant
winds and proximity to the coast. The most-
used grape is Monastrell, which is suited to
cultivation in this type of climate.
As such, wines in the Region of Murcia have
a personality which means it is well worth
sampling them at a visit to one of the many
wineries, or when sampling local cuisine.
