Information

The Casa del Artesano is located in the old bakers' granary or bread house, built in the 16th century under the direction of the master builder of the diocese of Cartagena Jerónimo Quijano, who also worked on the collegiate church of San Patricio and the cathedral of Murcia.
It is a Renaissance building, one of the few remaining in the city, which was erected on the medieval wall of Almohad origin, on top of the Clock Tower and next to the old Council.
The façade of the Plaza del Caño was built in masonry on its first two floors and in the 18th century the building was extended by adding a third floor.
On the façade are the coats of arms that Sebastián Bocanegra made in 1553. In the centre is the double-headed eagle of Charles I of Spain and V of Germany, and on the sides are the old seals of the City Council.
The interior of the ground floor is a simple room with arcades, where the bakery and butcher's shop were located, and the upper floor is completely open-plan and was used as a grain store.
The building was a granary until the first half of the 20th century, later it was a health centre, then a municipal archive and in 2020 it reopened its doors to house the Casa del Artesano (Artisan's House).
